How to install pallet racking in your warehouse

Assembling and installing pallet racks is straightforward, but by no means simple. Even a single missed component, from an anchor to a slab issue, can damage your system and, at worst, create an unsafe environment for workers.

If you’d still like to proceed, here are some of the steps you can take.

First, read the installation guide if one is provided! You will find most pallet rack does not come with installation instructions. We know that the temptation to simply jump in and get started is strong, but you have to read the manual along with the tool requirements and timeline estimation before you begin the installation process if those are present and if not you will need to talk to a professional to get an idea of what you will need to install the rack. Other things to consider is laying out the rack before you even start the installation process. You will need to consider things like the materials and the space that is needed to put them on a  shelf as well as remove them as well as the type of equipment going down the isles to move materials around.

Next, inspect the pallet rack. This includes examining the beams, shelving, and upright. You can do this visually, but make sure you don’t skip this step. If you received damaged product, you want to know before you begin installing everything. You should also make sure components such as anchors and wall ties are all accounted for.

Third, prepare your site. This is critical to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Have the walls and floors inspected beforehand to ensure they can support the shelving, and move all material handling equipment and accessories out of the warehouse before you begin. You should also clear out the aisles and ensure the spacing is correct and the location is right.

Finally, proper installation can begin. Erect the uprights first, then insert the rear beams. Front beams are the next step, followed by finishing any remaining bays. Finally, add decking and shelves, and call it a job well done!

Nothing is as simple as the steps imply, of course, and there are a number of reasons you might want to consider working with experienced installers.

Pros and cons of professional installation

Pros

Expert installation of pallet racking systems ensures that the storage racks are able to hold the weight of whatever product you want to put on them. At RSD, we have the tools necessary for secure installation of bolts, columns, assorted parts, and everything in between.

Our team is well-versed with the ins and outs of beam installation, bay installation, decking installation. Not only that, but we also have a firm grasp on how shelving affects business operations. We ensure that every shelf we install is accessible by forklift and that all rows are the proper size for loading and unloading.

A few more practical reasons professional installation is recommended include time, money, and peace of mind. The time necessary to install racking which is up to safety standards is significant, and every second you spend worrying about the installation is another second you aren’t able to focus on growing your business. Additionally, the areas in your facility under construction will be inaccessible, or at least severely impaired, for the duration of the process. A professional team will shorten installation time as much as possible so that you don’t lose money waiting for the locations to be completed. Finally, the peace of mind that comes with knowing the anchoring is solid, the rack columns are well-secured, and the height and length of the shelves are accurately measured is priceless.

Cons

The only “con” against professional installation is pricing. The price of the design can vary greatly according to manufacturer, frame type, and measurements at play. Money spent on the installation can easily be recouped, however, with the need for repair significantly reduced. This translates into less money spent on maintenance in the long run.

Shelving Depot also offers used racking solutions to further drive down the overall cost of your project.
